The Wine
Stopham Vineyard specialises in producing still, aromatic white wines from grape varieties such as Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, and Bacchus. They also craft traditional method sparkling wines from Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Their wines have garnered significant recognition, winning many awards, including the IEWA (Independent English Wine Awards) trophy for Best English Still Wine for three consecutive years. The 2015 Pinot Gris, for instance, won gold and was named "Best in Show" for still wines at the 2018 Independent English Wine Awards. Notably, one of their wines was chosen for the Queen's Diamond Jubilee celebrations aboard the Royal Barge and is served in prestigious establishments like Raymond Blanc's Le Manoir aux Quat' Saisons.Sustainability is a core principle at Stopham Vineyard, influencing every decision from vine to bottle. Situated within the South Downs National Park, the vineyard is committed to protecting the natural ecosystem through responsible practices. These include careful soil management, minimal pesticide use, and efficient water and energy consumption. They have transitioned from using herbicides under the vines to employing an under-vine mower and enrich their sandy soil with manure from estate cattle. Stopham Vineyard is also part of the Wines of Great Britain Sustainability scheme and is actively working towards becoming carbon neutral in the coming years.
The vineyard boasts its own winery, housed within a charming Grade II listed Victorian barn. Here, traditional winemaking is complemented by modern, innovative techniques and state-of-the-art equipment. Owner and winemaker Simon Woodhead, with his engineering background, applies a precise approach to winemaking, including advanced fermentation control.
