The Wine
Sandridge Barton, the current home of Sharpham Wine, boasts over 40 years of expertise in crafting award-winning English wines from the Dart Valley. They produce a diverse range of still and sparkling wines using grape varieties such as Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, Madeleine Angevine, Chardonnay, Bacchus, Pinot Meunier, Pinot Blanc, and Sauvignon Blanc. Notable offerings include the Classic Cuvée Rosé and the Sandridge Barton 'Blanc de Noir' sparkling wine, which received a Master Medal at the Global Sparkling Masters 2023. The Sandridge Barton Pinot Noir 2020 earned a Gold medal at the WineGB Awards, contributing to the seven medals awarded to the vineyard that year, including four silvers and two bronzes. Previously, under the Sharpham Wine brand, they also secured three consecutive gold medals at the Sommeliers Choice Awards and a Gold in the Decanter World Wine Awards. The vineyard employs a regenerative approach to viticulture, being part of the Higher Level Countryside Stewardship Scheme and a member of Sustainable Wines of Great Britain. They abstain from using pesticides and herbicides, and from 2025, will cease under-vine tilling, instead focusing on cover cropping for natural weed control and soil enrichment. Efforts also include enhancing biodiversity through tree planting and wildflower meadows.
The state-of-the-art winery, completed in 2020, was purpose-built with sustainability at its core. It features solar panels, rainwater harvesting, air-source heat pumps, an aerobic digestion waste system, and spring water extraction, significantly reducing its environmental footprint. All fermentations within the winery rely on indigenous yeasts from the vineyard.
