The Wine
Rowton Vineyard cultivates three grape varieties well-suited to the Shropshire climate: Solaris, Seyval Blanc, and Pinot Noir Précoce. From these, they craft a range of still, sparkling, and even dessert wines, focusing on fruit-driven styles with refreshing acidity. Solaris is a white variety known for tropical notes of pineapple and grapefruit, while Seyval Blanc, another white grape, produces crisp, lean wines ideal for sparkling production. Pinot Noir Précoce, an early-ripening red grape, yields soft wines with cherry and blackberry flavours. The vineyard has quickly gained recognition, winning numerous awards with its very first vintage. Notably, at the Wine GB Midlands and North Awards, their 2022 Solaris received a bronze medal and the Members Choice Trophy, while their 2022 Still Pink earned a silver medal. Their Late Harvest Solaris has also won an award at the Ludlow Food Festival and was selected for the Top 100 UK Wine list.
Sustainability is a core value at Rowton Vineyard, influencing their choice of grape varieties. They champion hybrid grapes that require minimal chemical inputs. Furthermore, they demonstrate their environmental commitment by using biodegradable cardboard grow guards for their vines instead of plastic. The vineyard operates an on-site cellar door, Rowton Barns, where wines can be purchased directly.
